DESCRIPTION:Pietro de Anna\, ISTE\, UNIL\nAbstract Within the shallow s
ubsurface\, soil\, rock\, fluids\, gases and living organisms are in close
interaction: the macroscopic resulting phenomena derive from the coupling
between fluid flow\, solutes mixing and microorganisms displacement\, gro
wth and adaptation. The common challenge in all these processes is their s
patial variability (heterogeneity). The consequent complexity that rises f
rom the coupling of these processes makes predictions\, based on rates mea
sured under homogeneized\, well-mixed conditions different by orders of ma
gnitudes from laboratory and field observations. The aim of my research is
the investigation of the coupling between non uniform flows through confi
ned micro-structures and the activity of biotic and a-biotic components of
the subsurface. This is done with theoretical and numerical modelling com
bined with experiments with microfluidics devices and time-lapse video-mic
 roscopy.\n\nBio I am a physicist\, I got a Master from the university of
Florence (Italy) in Statistical Mechanics and PhD in Geosciences from the
University of Rennes 1 (Brittany\, France)\, where I studied mixing and re
actions in porous media flows. I was a postdoctoral fellow at MIT (Boston\
, US)\, where I learned and developed microfluidics and microscopy techniq
ues for porous media flows investigation. Since 2015 I am an assistant pro
fessor (tenure track) at the Institute of Earth Sciences (ISTE) of the Uni
versity of Lausanne (UNIL). I am interested in the physics of flow and mix
ing-driven processes in confined micro-structures\, like filters and soil\
, with particular attention to their coupling with biological activities.
