 y\, University of Bern\nThe principle and mechanisms of upconversion will 
 be briefly introduced. The richness of upconversion phenomena will then be
  illustrated with examples from our own work. The upconversion properties 
 can be tuned by chemical variation of the materials. Both lanthanide and t
 ransition metal ions exhibit upconversion phenomena in properly chosen env
 ironments. And the combination of f and d elements in the same material ca
 n produce completely new phenomena. The first upconversion experiments on 
 nanocrystals transparently dispersed in a solvent were done about ten year
 s ago. They will be shown\, and here is a picture
