DESCRIPTION:Stefano Lucat (University of Utrecht)\nIntroduction of the to
rsion tensor on the space-time manifold \nleads to a Weyl invariant geome
try\, in which the torsion trace acts as \na "U(1)" compensating field fo
r the conformal transformations. Such \nsymmetry can be extended to the w
hole matter sector included in the \nstandard model by coupling the Higgs
scalar (and all other possible \nfundamental scalars) to the torsion. A
relevant question is then \nwhether such framework can be used to describ
e cosmic inflation\, as a \nspontaneous symmetry breaking phenomenon. It
turns out that this is \nindeed possible because the Weyl invariance impo
ses a distinct field \nspace geometry\, which introduces a slow roll plat
eau in the otherwise \ntoo steep quartic potential dictated by Weyl symme
try. The model can \nhave observable consequences that distinguish it fro
m other \ninflationary scenarios\, at least under some choices of initial
  \nconditions.
