DESCRIPTION:Many challenging fields of future research go beyond a single 
 discipline’s body of knowledge overlapping\, for instance\, the life sci
 ences on the one hand and mathematics\, engineering\, computer and natural
  sciences on the other. For visionary\, ambitious and radically new soluti
 ons to future research questions\, academic teams qualified across scienti
 fic disciplines are needed.\n \nThe Volkswagen Stiftung “Change of Cour
 se” call supports such interdisciplinary teams in:\n\n	gaining scientifi
 c experience across disciplines\n	implementing approaches from other disci
 plines.\n	positioning the team for interdisciplinary challenges. \n\nExam
 ples of “Qualification Concepts”: lab work\, lab rotation\, research s
 tays abroad\, new teaching formats\, MOOCs\, workshops\, summer schools\, 
 science communication.\n \nThe selected topic:\n\n	Can be chosen freely.\
 n	Must be interdisciplinary and under-researched.\n	Preference for life sc
 ientists aiming at acquiring knowledge and skills in the "hard" subjects.\
 n	Examples of eligible topics: \n	cognitive computing and neuro-inspired t
 echnologies\;\n	immunophysics and immunoengineering\;\n	nanotechnologies a
 nd new nonlinear optical methods for biomedical research\;\n	molecular bio
 engineering and hybrid devices (via functional linkage with living cells)\
 ;\n	bioelectronics\, biofabrication and bio-inspired energy conversion.\n\
 n \nWho can apply: \n\n\n	“Outstandingly qualified” scientists based 
 at a university or research institute and holding a PhD.\n	Swiss-based app
 licants must partner up with a group leader/professor based in Germany (th
 e PI).\n	Swiss-based applicants can receive funding only if the collaborat
 ion with the PI is new.\n	The team of applicants must be multidisciplinary
 .\n\n \nFunding & Duration:\n\n\n	Planning Grant: EUR 120’000 for 9-18-
 month\n	Application for “Qualification Concepts”: no upper or lower li
 mit.\n\nTotal duration: 3-4 years\n \nEligible costs:\n\n\n	Personnel (pr
 eferably for interdisciplinary work\, research stays at another institutio
 n\, temporary leave or discharge\, jointly supervised PhD students).\n	Tra
 vel\, Science communication measures\, consumables\, equipment\, VAT\, oth
 er.\n	Does NOT cover overheads.\n	The grant cannot replace institutes’ f
 unding.\n\n \nDeadline for planning phase: 15 January 2019 and 15 January
  2020 at 24:00.\nNumber of grants awarded per call: 8 - 10.\nDeadline for 
 Qualification Concepts: any time after the first annual interim report.\n
