DESCRIPTION:Prof. David J. Norris\nOptical Materials Engineering Laborator
 y\,\nETH Zurich\, Switzerland\nChE-605 - Highlights in Energy Research sem
inar series\nQuantum optics involves the coupling of quantum emitters to t
heir electromagnetic environment. Because this coupling is related to the
concentration of the optical field\, it is typically constrained by the di
ffraction limit of light. One way to circumvent this is by moving to quant
um plasmonics\, which uses surface plasmon polaritons (SPPs) instead of ph
otons. However\, despite the advantages of this approach\, quantum plasmon
ics has not yet been fully explored. It has been limited in large part by
experimental difficulties in creating the necessary structures. We address
this problem by combining state-of-the-art quantum emitters with plasmoni
c structures (waveguides and reflectors) that approach theoretical perform
ance limits. We synthesize highly luminescent colloidal quantum dots (phot
oluminescence quantum yield >90%) and precisely place them on template-str
ipped silver wedge waveguides. We demonstrate efficient coupling of the qu
antum-dot emission into guided plasmonic modes in the waveguide.  In addi
tion\, by adding efficient reflectors\, high-Q plasmonic resonators are ob
tained. More generally\, the flexibility and fidelity of the resulting qua
ntum-plasmonic systems indicates that they will allow a broad set of nanos
cale quantum-optical measurements to be pursued.\n\nThe seminar can also b
e followed remotely by joining the online Cisco WebEx meeting (connection
possible 15 minutes before the talk).\nSee here the documentation how to i
nstall the Cisco WebEx add-on on your computer.\nIn case of problem\, you
