DESCRIPTION:Dr. Miguel Mahecha\n9:00 – 10:00 – Dr. Miguel Mahecha\nRes
earch Group Leader\, Max Planck Institute for Biogeochemistry\, Germany\n
  \nA data-driven perspective for studying high-dimensional land-surface p
rocesses \n \nUnderstanding environmental dynamics in the light of clima
te change is a major scientific challenge. However\, the unprecedented gro
wth and diversity of data streams is opening new perspectives to effective
ly study these globally coupled phenomena. In this talk I introduce the co
ncept of the “Earth System Data Cube” which allows us to effectively i
nvestigate environmental phenomena across variables\, space\, and time.\n\
nI will then exemplify the power of this concept by asking the question ho
w do we detect and interpret the effects of climate extremes on ecosystem
functioning. Our findings bring to light a perspective for studying the hu
man-environment nexus during climate extremes and discuss the challenges a
head. In general\, I expect such data cube approaches to have great potent
ial for the joint interpretation of environmental observations from multip
le sources and models as well as seamlessly integrate into the latest deve
lopments in machine learning and model data integration. Overall\, the hop
e is to support data-intensive research across disciplinary boundaries.
