DESCRIPTION:Dr. Miguel Mahecha\n9:00 – 10:00 – Dr. Miguel Mahecha\nRes
earch Group Leader\, Max Planck Institute for Biogeochemistry\, Germany\n\
nA data-driven perspective for studying high-dimensional land-surface proc
esses\n\nUnderstanding environmental dynamics in the light of climate chan
ge is a major scientific challenge. However\, the unprecedented growth and
diversity of data streams is opening new perspectives to effectively stud
y these globally coupled phenomena. In this talk I introduce the the conce
pt of the “Earth System Data Cube” which allows us to effectively inve
stigate environmental phenomena across variables\, space\, and time.\nI wi
ll then exemplify the power of this concept by asking the question how do
we detect and interpret the effects of climate extremes on ecosystem funct
ioning. Our findings bring to light a perspective for studying the human-e
nvironment nexus during climate extremes and discuss the challenges ahead.
In general\, I expect such data cube approaches to have great potential f
or the joint interpretation of environmental observations from multiple so
urces and models as well as seamlessly integrate into the latest developme
nts in machine learning and model data integration. Overall\, the hope is
to support data-intensive research across disciplinary boundaries.\n
