DESCRIPTION:Prof. Sophie Bacq\, Northeastern University \n"In(conspicuous)
: Immigration and visibility enhancing strategic choices of informal econo
my entrepreneurs "\n\nAbstract\nWhile organizational visibility is fundame
ntal to garner critical resources and stakeholder support\, informal econo
my entrepreneurs who increase the visibility of their enterprise run the r
isk of exposing themselves to significant social costs or expropriation. D
rawing on institutional embeddedness\, we contend that domestic informal e
conomy entrepreneurs will calibrate visibility enhancing strategic decisio
ns differently than immigrant informal economy entrepreneurs. We explore t
his contention using a configurational QCA analysis on a unique census dat
aset of informal economy entrepreneurs in the township of Delft South in C
ape Town\, South Africa. Our results indicate that immigrant informal entr
epreneurs play a particularly high stakes game: compared to domestic infor
mal entrepreneurs\, they are more likely to pursue visibility enhancing st
rategies and their performance is more directly tied to these strategic ch
oices. Our study contributes novel insights to the unique role of immigrat
ion and institutional embeddedness in the informal economy.\n
