DESCRIPTION:Prof Guglielmo Lanzani\, Center for Nano Science Technology @
POLIMI Istituto Italiano di Tecnologia\, Italy\nAbstract: Organic semicon
ductors in different shapes and composition can be interfaced with living
cells. This provides a new\, exciting route towards optical control of phy
siological functions or the restoring of natural functions. In this talk I
will present a number of experiments that show the effective abiotic-biot
ic coupling with cells and small animals\, suggesting the potential of org
anic light actuators for geneless opto stimulation. Investigated systems a
re based on carbon molecules or polymers as photoactive component in plana
 r films\, nanostructured layers or nanoparticles. Spectroscopy\, photo-ele
ctrochemistry and photo-electrophysiology are exploited to carry out the e
xperimental investigations. While the mechanism explaining such coupling i
 s still unknown\, it is appering that thermal\, capacitive\, faradaic or c
hemical coupling are all options to be carefully evaluated. To conclude th
e successful use of an organic retina implant for restoring visual acuity
in blind animals will be reported.\n\nBio: GL research activity regards th
e science and technology of nanostructured and molecular materials. The ma
in area of experimental work is photophysics\, for application in energy\,
bio-photonics\, neuroscience and medicine. In particular\, he is recently
involved in the project for developing an artificial retina prosthesis. T
he activity produced 300 papers in international journals\, 190 invited ta
lks at international conferences and five patents. He is involved in two s
tart-up companies. He is the author of the book “The Photophysics behind
  Photovoltaics and Photonics” for Wiley-VCH.
