 of “imagine the unimaginable”. ITER\, classified in France as a “Bas
 ic Nuclear Installation”\, is no exception and it is undergoing a strict
  process of technical and public examination in order to get its nuclear l
 icense. In this talk the licensing process of ITER\, the safety characteri
 stics of ITER\, and for extension of fusion\, will be presented with a par
 ticular emphasis to the identification of risks and their possible impact 
 to people and the environment.
