DESCRIPTION:Prof. Raúl Bayoán Cal\, Department of Mechanical and Materia
ls Engineering at Portland State University\nAbstract:\nExperiments and nu
merical studies have demonstrated that the power extracted by the wind pla
nt is directly and proportionately related to the transport of mean kineti
c energy - here the parting point.  This is intimately tied with the bala
nce of turbulence kinetic energy.  These relations are shown through wind
tunnel experiments and large eddy simulations where various terms are con
sidered with the aim of identifying leading terms and their role in the dy
namics of such wind plants.\n \nBio:\nRaúl Bayoán Cal is a professor in
the Department of Mechanical and Materials Engineering at Portland State
University\; a faculty member since 2010. He is currently a Fulbright Scho
lar at Ecole Normale Supérieure de Lyon.  Received his Ph.D. in Mechanic
al Engineering from Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute in 2006. During 2006
to 2009\, he was a postdoctoral fellow at Johns Hopkins University. His ar
ea of research is focused on understanding turbulence with emphasis placed
on physics related of wall-bounded\, free-shear and multi-phase flows as
 well as renewable energy.\n
