DESCRIPTION:Prof. Peter Childs\, Faculty of Engineering\, Dyson School of
Design Engineering\, Imperial College London\nAbstract:\nUniversities fulf
il two principal goals\, knowledge development and knowledge transfer. The
activities of research and teaching are well-rehearsed and developed. But
are there many forms of knowledge? After all new knowledge is a treasured
sought-after commodity. A new design shows that something is possible\, a
nd the whole world can see this on the shelf or through a browser. A new b
usiness also acts as a beacon showing that a particular approach to enterp
rise is viable. As such both represent new knowledge. We have been doing e
nterprise by design through a long-standing collaboration between the Roya
l College of Art (RCA) and Imperial College London. This collaboration com
menced in 1980 with the establishment of the Innovation Design Engineering
(IDE) double masters programme. The programme has resulted in many spinou
ts and we remain in touch with over 500 of the 600 alumni. Examples of ent
erprises arising from alumni include Bare Conductive\, Omlet\, Concrete Ca
nvas and Doppel. Alumni are also in eminent positions across the globe fro
m IDEO and SmartDesign to Microsoft\, Apple and Google.  This talk will e
xplore the world of design of products\, services and systems\, experience
s and artefacts and the associated culture of enterprise by design.\n \nB
io:\nPeter Childs is Head of the Dyson School of Design Engineering and th
e Professorial Lead in Engineering Design at Imperial College London. His
general interests include: creativity tools and innovation\; design proces
s and design rationale\; fluid flow and heat transfer\, particularly rotat
ing flow\; sustainable energy component\, concept and system design\; robo
tics. Prior to his current post at Imperial he was director of the Rolls-R
oyce supported University Technology Centre for Aero-Thermal Systems\, dir
ector of InQbate and professor at the University of Sussex. He has contrib
uted to over 200 refereed journal and conference papers\, and several book
s including the Handbook on Mechanical Design Engineering (Elsevier\, 2013
\, 2019) as well as co-authoring books on rural urban migration\, inclusiv
e sports and sports technology. He has been principal or co-investigator o
n contracts totalling over £80 million. He is the joint course director f
or the Innovation Design Engineering double master degree run jointly by I
mperial and the Royal College of Art\, and Founder Director and Chief Scie
 ntific Officer at QBot Ltd.
