DESCRIPTION:Prof. Xavier Trepat\, Institute of Bioengineering of Catalonia
  (IBEC)\nAbstract:\nBiological processes such as morphogenesis\, tissue re
 generation\, and cancer invasion are driven by collective migration\, divi
 sion\, and folding of epithelial tissues. Each of these functions is tight
 ly regulated by mechanochemical networks and ultimately driven by physical
  forces. I will present maps of cell-cell and cell-extracellular matrix (E
 CM) forces during cell migration and division in a variety of epithelial m
 odels\, from the expanding MDCK cluster to the regenerating zebrafish epic
 ardium. These maps revealed that migration and division in growing tissues
  are jointly regulated. I will also present direct measurements of epithel
 ial traction\, tension\, and luminal pressure in three-dimensional epithel
 ia of controlled size and shape. By examining epithelial tension over time
 -scales of hours and for nominal strains reaching 1000%\, we establish a r
 emarkable degree of tensional homeostasis mediated by superelastic behavio
 r.\n\nBio:\nXavier Trepat received a BSc in Physics in 2000 and a BSc in E
 ngineering in 2001. In 2004 he obtained his PhD from the Medical School at
  the University of Barcelona. He then joined the Program in Molecular and 
 Integrative Physiological Sciences at Harvard University as a postdoctoral
  researcher. In 2008 he became a "Ramón y Cajal" researcher at the Univer
 sity of Barcelona and in January 2011 an ICREA Research Professor at the I
 nstitute for Bioengineering of Catalonia (IBEC). He is Group Leader of the
  Integrative Cell and Tissue Dynamics research line at IBEC. In 2015 he wo
 n the Banc de Sabadell Award for Biomedical Research.
