DESCRIPTION:Prof. Jean-Charles Bolomey\, University Paris-Sud XI\nThis pre
sentation consists of two major parts. The first one consists of a short t
utorial review of the minimum engineering background required for a compre
hensive approach to modulated scattering systems. Small antennas will be m
ore particularly considered because low-invasiveness and high spatial reso
lution constitute significant advantages in many sensing applications. The
power budget\, a key issue for such systems\, is derived from a very simp
le reciprocity-based formulation. The advantage of this analytical formula
tion is to apply\, whatever the distance\, for arbitrarily complex scenari
os. In addition\, the influence of various parameters can be clearly ident
ified\, paving the way for optimizing the antenna design in terms of globa
l system performance. Examples of both active and passive scatterers illus
trate the efficiency of this approach. The second part is more speculative
and aims to identify transfer opportunities between RFID's and MST techno
 logies for sensing applications.
