DESCRIPTION:Dr. Jeremy Mason\, Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory\nHis
torically\, principles guiding the rational design of polycrystalline mate
rials have focused on structures the scale of a single grain or smaller.
For example\, the Hall-Petch relationship is attributed to dislocation pi
leup within a grain\, without considering the interaction of the grain wit
h the surroundings.  The opportunity to engineer a microstructure at long
er length scales depends on the development of suitable language and conce
pts to describe the statistical features of grain ensembles though.  This
seminar will discuss two ongoing efforts in that direction.  The first i
s a quaternion-based approach that simplifies the analysis and visualizati
on of orientations and crystallographic texture.  The second is a techniq
ue to completely describe the statistical topology of a grain boundary net
work and rigorously compare the differences between microstructures.
