DESCRIPTION:Prof. D. Tuia\n9:00 – 10:00 – Prof. Devis Tuia\nLaboratory
of GeoInformation Science and Remote Sensing\, Wageningen University\, th
e Netherlands\n\nMachine learning and Earth Observation for the environmen
t \n\nEarth observation is on the rise. Digital images of the Earth surfa
ce are nowadays heavily used in the scientific world\, but have also penet
rated our daily life via navigation systems\, mass media and mobile techno
logy. This is due to the massive increase of satellite data and to the  d
emocratization of drones technology. This data availability brings the pro
mise of monitoring the environment in unprecedented spatial and temporal d
etails.\n\nHowever\, given the volumes of data acquired\, as well as their
heterogeneity and complexity\, new powerful information extraction models
are required to convert the data into relevant information. In this talk\
, Prof. Tuia will present recent advances in environmental modeling happen
ing at the interface between machine learning and Earth observation\, disc
uss new challenges and stress the importance of human-machine interaction.
With examples issued from automated wildlife censuses and digital humanit
arianism\, he will present the federative aspect of being a remote sensing
  data scientist.
