DESCRIPTION:Dr. A.R. Sanderson\, Scientific Computing and Imagining Insti
tute\, University of Utah\, USA\nIn this talk I will present three tools
developed for analysis and visualization of fusion simulations. The first
tool\, the Poincaré Plot was designed for analyzing the magnetic field to
pology in MHD simulations. Specifically\, our goal was to develop an inter
active tool that could quickly construct the major features of the magneti
c field while at the same time analyze the topology and identify island ch
ains. To accomplish this task we treat the magnetic fieldline as a signal
and search for harmonics in both toroidal and poloidal directions. The sec
ond tool is a query based selection tool that allows for the interrogation
particle based codes\, as such PIC used in gyrokinetic simulations. Searc
hing through millions to billions of particles to find anomalies can be a
time consuming process. Our query based tool utilizes index based selectio
n to speed up the search while allowing the user to form range based queri
es over multiple time steps. The end process allows the user to quickly fo
rm "what if" questions and search for correlations in the data such as tho
se found with particles that diffuse radially during the simulation. The l
ast tool forms the basis for constructing and performing synthetic diagnos
tics for comparing experimental and simulation data. Such tools allow scie
ntists to perform validation comparisons as part of their V&V process. All
of the tools have been developed and deployed as part of the VisIt toolki
 t.
