DESCRIPTION:Prof. Emanuele SPADARO - MPI für Mathematik in den Naturwisse
nchaften\nThe study of minimal surfaces has been central in many problems
in geometric analysis and partial differential equations. In particular\,
the questions of the existence and regularity have played a crucial role i
n this regard. However\, despite their relevance\, some basic issues have
been settled recently and many remain still open.\n\nIn this talk I will d
iscuss some of the main questions on the regularity of surfaces minimizing
the area (in the class of rectifiable currents in geometric measure theor
y). Differently from the case of hypersurfaces\, our knowledge of the sing
ularities in higher codimension is much poorer and\, in its most general f
orm\, it consists of an estimate on the dimension of the singular set due
to Almgren and proved in his "Big regularity paper".\n\nI will present som
e new results on this line obtained in collaboration with Prof. C. De Lell
is (University of Zurich)\, which eventually lead to a new simplified proo
f of Almgren's partial regularity result.
