DESCRIPTION: Saul Perlmutter\, 2011 Nobel Prize laureate in Physics\nAbst
ract:\nThere is a body of techniques and practices\, a language and cultur
e\, that is usually implicitly taught by apprenticeship and osmosis to gra
duate students and postdocs in the sciences. This is the underpinning of a
n approach to building a credible sense of the “real world” that is sh
ared by scientists\, but not much used (or understood) by the rest of soci
ety. Equipping future generations with this scientific-style critical thin
king could be one of our most reasonable defenses against confused thinkin
g and misinformation\, both major challenges to our democratic societies
’ ability to make deliberative decisions. Can we make these implicit con
cepts explicit\, and teach them to scientists and non-scientists alike? Co
uld this help our society address difficult issues such as are raised by t
he global environment and economics? And how could citizen scientists use
these tools to help build sources of credibility on the web and in the new
 s. This talk is intended to start a discussion.\n\nBio:  \nSaul Perlmutt
er is a 2011 Nobel Laureate\, sharing the prize in Physics for the discove
ry of the accelerating expansion of the Universe. He is a professor of phy
sics at the University of California\, Berkeley\, where he holds the Frank
lin W. and Karen Weber Dabby Chair\, and a senior scientist at Lawrence Be
rkeley National Laboratory. He is the leader of the international Supernov
a Cosmology Project\, and director of the Berkeley Institute for Data Scie
nce and executive director of the Berkeley Center for Cosmological Physics
. His undergraduate degree was from Harvard and his PhD from UC Berkeley.
In addition to other awards and honors\, he is a member of the National Ac
ademy of Sciences and the American Academy of Arts and Sciences and a fell
ow of the American Physical Society and the American Association for the A
dvancement of Science.  In addition to over 200 scientific publications\,
Perlmutter has also written popular articles\, and has appeared in numero
us PBS\, Discovery Channel\, and BBC documentaries. His interest in teachi
ng scientific-style critical thinking for scientists and non-scientists al
ike led to Berkeley courses on Sense and Sensibility and Science and Physi
 cs & Music.\n\nWatch his talk: https://mediaspace.epfl.ch/media/0_4jubxfme
