DESCRIPTION:Lothar Thiele was born in Aachen\, Germany on April 7\, 1957. 
 He received his Diplom-Ingenieur and Dr.-Ing. degrees in Electrical Engine
 ering from the Technical University of Munich in 1981 and 1985 respectivel
 y. After completing his Habilitation thesis from the Institute of Network 
 Theory and Circuit Design of the Technical University Munich\, he joined t
 he Information Systems Laboratory at Stanford University in 1987. In 1988\
 , he took up the chair of microelectronics at the Faculty of Engineering\,
  University of Saarland\, Saarbrucken\, Germany. He joined ETH Zurich\, Sw
 itzerland\, as a full Professor of Computer Engineering\, in 1994. His res
 earch interests include models\, methods and software tools for the design
  of embedded systems\, internet of things\, cyberphysical systems\, sensor
  networks\, embedded software and bioinspired optimization techniques. Lot
 har Thiele is associate editor of INTEGRATION - the VLSI Journal\, Journal
  of Signal Processing Systems\, IEEE Transaction on Industrial Informatics
 \, Journal of Systems Architecture\, IEEE Transactions on Evolutionary Com
 putation\, Journal of Real-Time Systems\, ACM Transactions on Sensor Netwo
 rks\, ACM Transactions on Cyberphysical Systems\, and ACM Transaction on I
 nternet of Things. In 1986 he received the "Dissertation Award" of the Tec
 hnical University of Munich\, in 1987\, the "Outstanding Young Author Awar
 d" of the IEEE Circuits and Systems Society\, in 1988\, the Browder J. Tho
 mpson Memorial Award of the IEEE\, and in 2000-2001\, the "IBM Faculty Par
 tnership Award". In 2004\, he joined the German Academy of Sciences Leopol
 dina. In 2005\, he was the recipient of the Honorary Blaise Pascal Chair o
 f University Leiden\, The Netherlands. Since 2009 he is a member of the Fo
 undation Board of Hasler Foundation\, Switzerland. Since 2010\, he is a me
 mber of the Academia Europaea. In 2013\, he joined the National Research C
 ouncil of the Swiss National Science Foundation. \nAbstract: If visions 
 and forecasts of industry come true then we will be soonsurrounded by bill
 ions of interconnected embedded devices. We willinteract with them in a cy
 ber-human symbiosis\, they will not onlyobserve us but also our environmen
 t\, and they will be part of manyvisible and ubiquitous objects around us.
  We have the legitimateexpectation that the individual devices as well as 
 the overallsystem behaves in a reliable\, predictable and trustworthy mann
 er.\n \nBesides\, there are many application domains where we rely on aco
 rrect and fault-free system behavior. We expect trustworthyresults from se
 nsing\, computation\, communication and actuation dueto economic importanc
 e or even catastrophic consequences if theoverall system is not working co
 rrectly\, e.g.\, in industrialautomation\, distributed control of energy s
 ystems\, surveillance\,medical applications\, or early warning scenarios i
 n the context ofbuilding safety or environmental catastrophes. Finally\,tr
 ustworthiness and reliability are mandatory for the societalacceptance of 
 human-cyber interaction and cooperation.\n \nIt will be argued that we ne
 ed novel architectural concepts\, anassociated design process and validati
 ons strategies to satisfy thestrongly conflicting requirements and associa
 ted design challengesof platforms for the Internet of Things: Handle at th
 e same timelimited available resources\, adaptive run-time behavior\, andp
 redictability. These challenges concern all components andfunctions of an 
 IoT system\, e.g.\, information extraction fromglobal data\, local decisio
 n making\, computation\, storage\, wirelesscommunication\, energy manageme
 nt\, energy harvesting\, sensors\,sensor interfaces\, and actuation. The f
 ocus of the presentation ison new models and methods as well as examples f
 rom various fieldsin environmental monitoring.\n
