DESCRIPTION:Professor Orcun Goksel from ETH Zurich\,  Head of Computer-as
sisted Applications in Medicine (CAiM) Group  \nAbstract: The talk will s
tart with a brief overview of medical ultrasound imaging. Then\, simplific
ations of complex wave propagation for their use in formulating inverse p
roblems to reconstruct images of various tissue properties will be present
ed\, in particular with the problem statements and our contributions on
“beamforming" as the generation of spatially-resolved echo images from a
cquired multi-sensor temporal traces\; “elastography" as the reconstruct
ion of tissue viscoelasticity maps from internal motion\; and "ultrasound
computed tomography” (USCT) as the tomographic reconstruction of local
sound-speed and other propagation parameters.  Estimating scattering di
stributions in the tissue will also be demonstrated as an inverse-problem
of deconvolution\, with a particular use in the context of modeling tissue
-specific scattering within ray-tracing based approximations aiming at rea
l-time ultrasound image simulation for medical training.  Recent contribu
tions on deep variational networks for USCT image reconstruction will conc
lude this talk.\n\nBio: Dr. Göksel received two BSc degrees in electrical
engineering and in computer science from the Middle East Technical Univer
sity\, Ankara\, Turkey. He received his MASc and PhD degrees in electrical
and computer engineering at the University of British Columbia\, Vancouve
r\, Canada. Following postdoc and senior scientist positions\, since 2014
he is an assistant professor at ETH Zurich\, Switzerland.  He currently l
eads the Computer-assisted Applications in Medicine (CAiM) Group within th
e Computer Vision Laboratory at the Department of Information Technology a
nd Electrical Engineering.  He is also affiliated with the ETH department
s of Computer Science and Health Sciences. Dr. Göksel has received the 20
17 Swiss Venture Award\, 2016 ETH Spark Award\, 2014 CTI Swiss MedTech Awa
rd\, and 2011 Innovation in Technology Award for best dissertation in west
 ern North America.
