DESCRIPTION:Prof. Margaret Roberts of the University of California\, San D
iego \nAbout the speaker\nMargaret Roberts studies political methodology a
nd the politics of information\, with a specific focus on the methods of a
utomated content analysis and politics of censorship in China. She uses la
rge\, online datasets to reverse-engineer the content of censorship and on
line propaganda in China and estimate its impact on citizens' access to in
formation. Professor Roberts received her Ph.D. from Harvard University in
2014 and M.S. in statistics from Stanford University in 2009.\nCurrently\
, she is working on a variety of projects that span censorship\, propagand
a\, topic models and other methods of text analysis.\n\nAbout the seminar\
nCensored: Distraction and Diversion Inside China's Great Firewall (2018\,
Princeton University Press) describes how incomplete and porous censorshi
p in China have an impact on information consumption in China\, even when
censorship is easy to circumvent. Using new methods to measure the influen
ce of censorship and propaganda\, I present a theory that explains how cen
sorship impacts citizens' access to information and in turn why authoritar
ian regimes decide to use different types of censorship in different circu
mstances to control the spread of information.\n\nHosts: \n\n	Prof. Kennet
 h Younge\, Technology & Innovation Strategy Lab\, EPFL\n	Prof. Robert West
 \, Data Science Lab\, EPFL\n\nAbout the Seminar series\n\nThe College of M
anagement of Technology\, in collaboration with the School of Computer & C
ommunication Sciences\, has launched a new EPFL Seminar series on “Compu
tational Social Sciences & Economics.” The seminars will bring in leadin
g guest speakers to examine questions that are of great importance for EPF
 L and society more broadly.
