DESCRIPTION:Dr Pascal Peduzzi\, Science Division\, United Nations Environm
ent Programme (UN Environment)\, is the director of GRID-Geneva\, a team o
f 20 scientists who are transforming data into information to support deci
sions making processes. He holds a PhD and a MSc in Environmental Sciences
\, with specialization in remote sensing and GIS. He is coordinating the i
mplementation of the World Environment Situation Room\, a data platform fo
r monitoring the state of Earth Environment. As a part-time professor at t
he University of Geneva\, Pascal teaches courses on environmental sciences
\, modelling disaster risk as well as on Sustainable Development. His main
areas of research are links between Global Environment Change and Risk. H
e was one of the selected lead authors for the IPCC Special Report on Extr
eme Events\, was leading research on Global Risk Analysis for UN Environme
nt\, UNISDR and UNDP. He is also interested in computation of planetary bo
undaries\, especially to bring this as a tool for monitoring country progr
esses. One of his specific interest Ecosystem Based Adaptation (EbA) for c
limate change adaptation and disaster risk reduction (EcoDRR). Pascal Pedu
zzi is also involved in identifying Emerging Environmental Issues\, as the
initiator of the Environment Alert Bulletin\, co-coordinator of the UN En
vironment Foresight report on Emerging Issues. He is the author of various
scientific publications and provided numerous conferences to governments\
, media and the general public to raise awareness on the consequences of h
uman impacts on the environment.\nAbstract:\nOur Environment is changing r
 apidly. Our climate\, ecosystems\, soil\, air\, freshwater\, ocean\, fores
ts & landcover\, urban areas\, require our full attention. We need to find
the appropriate solutions to numerous challenging issues. This involves f
inding the most relevant policies\, efficient technologies\, advices for n
ew life styles\, push for circular economy\, or investments in natural cap
ital. For this we need to access relevant and up to data information\, to
identify status\, trends\, patterns\, hotspots. To understand the underlyi
ng drivers\, the pressures and find the appropriate responses.\nThe United
Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) has being created in 1972\, it has t
he mandate to keep the World Environment Situation under review. To this e
nd UNEP is now generating a new data & information platform called the Wor
ld Environment Situation Room. It aims at integrating data from various da
ta providers\, transform data into information to support the environmenta
l policies process. This platform will be operational in 2022 and will all
ow users to visualize\, interrogate\, link and download data and informati
on products.\nNow entering the era of big data\, the challenge is to proce
ss large amount of data\, which requires automation of data processing. Ho
wever\, not all information are needed. Selecting the relevant information
is the second challenge. This will be achieved via the "One Global Partne
rship" a network of about 15 data centres. UNEP/GRID-Geneva is at the core
of this endeavour\, with 20 Environment Data Scientists\, this centre is
specialized in transforming data into information\, especially geospatial
data be from in situ\, models or satellite imagery. This presentation aims
at presenting our current status and vision of the World Environment Situ
 ation Room.\n
