CATEGORIES:Call for proposal
DESCRIPTION:Aim: Through the Congressionally Directed Medical Research Pro
gram (CDMRP)\, the Department of Defense is announcing the Vision Research
Program (VRP) for 2019. The Focused Translational Team Science Award is i
ntended to support a highly collaborative and translational team initiativ
e that will fundamentally advance the understanding and treatment of eye i
njury and/or visual dysfunction that result from a military-relevant traum
 atic event (e.g.\, blast\, blunt\, thermal\, chemical\, directed energy tr
auma).\n \nTo meet the intent of the award mechanism\, applications to th
e FY19 VRP Investigator-Initiated Research Award must address research in
one or more of the following Focus Areas listed at the end of this announc
ement.\n \nKey aspects of this award include:\n\n	Overarching Challenge:
Team science is a collaborative effort that leverages the strengths of inv
estigators specializing in different fields to address an overarching scie
ntific challenge or question. To identify an overarching challenge or ques
tion that meets the intent of the FTTSA\, investigators are strongly encou
raged to consider barrier(s) to and/or gap(s) in the understanding\, preve
ntion\, diagnosis\, mitigation\, and/or treatment of eye injury or visual
dysfunction associated with a military-relevant trauma and envision what m
ay be achievable in 10 to 15 years. Based on the long-term vision\, invest
igators will identify what should and can be achieved in the near-term\, a
nd will design projects and research teams around these goals.\n	Research
Projects: Applications shall include at least three but no more than five
distinct research projects that together form a concerted and synergistic
effort to address the overarching challenge. Each project\, as well as the
overall effort\, must align with one or more of the FY19 VRP Focus Areas.
The potential topics of individual projects are wide-ranging.\n	Research
Team: The overall effort will be led by a Principal Investigator (PI) with
demonstrated success in leading large collaborative research project(s).
The overall lead PI is required to devote a minimum of 20% effort to this
award. The project leader of each of the complementary and synergistic res
earch projects must be an independent investigator with strong qualificati
 ons.\n\n \nFunding:        Maximum USD $ 5’000’000\n \nDuratio
 n:      3 years\n \nEligibility: Applicants from international organi
zations or institutions are eligible to apply\, and there are no citizensh
ip restrictions. The overall lead PI must be an independent investigator a
t or above the level of Associate Professor (or equivalent). The overall l
ead PI is required to devote a minimum of 20% effort to this award.\n \nH
ow to Apply: Pre-applications are submitted through the eBRAP platform. Th
ey should contain contact information\, a list of collaborators and key pe
rsonnel\, a preproposal narrative\, and supporting documents as suggested
on the platform. Full applications (by invitation) will be made via a Gran
ts.gov workspace. Full application packages can be downloaded from Grants.
 gov at any time.\n \nPre-Application Deadline: 06 August 2019\, 5:00 p.m.
  EST (23:00 CET)\nFull Application Deadline:  06 December 2019\, 11:59 p.
 m. EST (05:59 12 Sep\, CET)\n \nGrants.gov Funding Opportunity Number: W8
1XWH-19-VRP-FTTSA\n \nFurther information\n\n\n	To see the program announ
cement\, navigate to the search page on Grants.gov and search for the Oppo
rtunity Number W81XWH-19-VRP-FTTSA.\n	For questions about the eBRAP or Gra
nts.gov platforms\, contact the Research Office.\n\n \nFY19 VRP Focus Are
as\n \n\n	Eye injury or visual dysfunction as related to a military-relev
ant traumatic event. Examples of military-relevant trauma may include\, bu
 t are not limited to:\n	\n Blast\, blunt\, thermal\, or chemical trauma D
evelop reliable non-invasive methods or tools for monitoring VCA graft rej
ection\n Trauma caused by directed energy weapons such as laser\, microwa
ves\, and particle beams\n	\n	\n	Diagnosis and treatment of eye injuries i
n austere environments and prolonged field care settings\n
