DESCRIPTION:Dr. Davide Bossini\, Technische Universität Dortmund\nThe pre
sent-day magnetic recording technology\, which is the foundation of data c
enters\, is predicted to be able to sustain the wildly growing worldwide d
emand of cloud storage only for the coming 10-15 years. This fact has moti
vated the exploration of alternative approaches to develop a faster\, more
energy efficient and scalable magnetic recording. A promising strategy re
lies on femtosecond laser pulses as tool to write and read magnetic bits o
f information. The duration of such stimulus is comparable or even shorter
than the characteristic time-scales of the vibrational\, magnetic and ele
ctronic fundamental excitations in solid. Therefore non-equilibrium routes
towards the control of the magnetic order in solids can be explored. In m
y talk I will discuss a few major results concerning the generation\, mani
pulation and detection of magnetic excitations[1-3]\, tackling also the ba
rely-addressed issue of the coupling f the spin and charge dynamics on the
ultrafast time-scale.\n[1] D. Bossini and Th. Rasing\, Physica Scripta 92
