DESCRIPTION:Prof. J. Huang\n09:00 – 10:00 – Prof. Jeffrey Huang\nHead
 of Media x Design Laboratory\, EPFL\n\nARTIFICIAL DESIGN \n\nWith the
increasing pressure to cope with the speed and scope of rapid urbanizatio
n\, radically new approaches to architectural and urban design that do not
rely solely on the bounded rationality and capacity of humans seem inevit
able. Humans may still design a few selected iconic and boutique buildings
\, but most architectural and urban design tasks will need to be handled
“artificially” in order to respond to the challenges of rapid urbaniza
tion\, and to generate sustainable architectural and urban solutions that
are sensitive to the unique features of individual localities.\n \nIn thi
s ENAC research seminar\, I will present recent work conducted at the Medi
a x Design Lab\, aimed at examining the possibility of “artificial desig
n.” The research is predicated on the belief that in order to artificial
ize the architectural and urban design process\, some groundwork will be n
ecessary\, especially with regard to the definition of the design algorith
ms that can constitute the building blocks of a future\, semi- or fully ar
tificial design and urbanism. To illustrate our ongoing approach\, I will
discuss sample artificial design algorithms\, such as site analytics\, gro
wth typology\, and form defamiliarization algorithms\, which\, when abstra
cted and shared as open source codes\, and with the contribution of others
\, could constitute foundational elements for a nascent\, open planetary l
ibrary for artificial architectural and urban design.\n
