DESCRIPTION:Prof. Kostas Kostarelos\, University of Manchester (UK)\nWEEKL
 Y BIOENGINEERING COLLOQUIA SERIES\n(sandwiches served)\n\nAbstract: \nThe
use of nanomaterials in medicine is growing at an unprecedented rate for a
variety of therapeutic\, diagnostic or combinatory applications. Graphene
and other 2D materials possess properties that make them attractive mater
ials for biomedical applications. What is needed today is the determinatio
n of the unique characteristics graphene and 2D materials possess and how
to transform them into value and solution propositions for specific clinic
al challenges. This talk will attempt to illustrate how graphene-based 2-d
imensional materials with their electrical performance and the suitability
for integration into flexible devices can constitute a versatile platform
that could help address many of the current challenges in neural interfac
e design. An alternative graphene material configuration and application w
ill also be described based on biological-grade graphene oxide (GO) sheet
suspensions and their interaction with tissues of living animals (in vivo)
. The pharmacokinetic and toxicokinetic profile of the GO sheets in correl
ation with their physicochemical characteristics (thickness\, lateral dime
nsions) can allow the determination of the critical parameters that can al
lows their further development towards the clinic.\n\nBio:\nDr. Kostarelos
obtained his Diploma in Chemical Engineering and PhD from the Department
of Chemical Engineering at Imperial College London\, studying the steric s
tabilization of liposomes using block copolymer molecules. He carried out
his postdoctoral training in various medical institutions in the United St
ates and has worked closely with D. Papahadjopoulos (UCSF\, USA)\, G. Sgou
ros (Memorial Sloan-Kettering\, NY\, USA) and R.G. Crystal (Weill Medical
College of Cornell University\, NY\, USA). He was Assistant Professor of G
enetic Medicine & Chemical Engineering in Medicine at Cornell University W
eill Medical College when he relocated to the UK as the Deputy Director of
Imperial College Genetic Therapies Centre in 2002. In 2003 he joined the
Centre for Drug Delivery Research at the UCL School of Pharmacy as the Dep
uty Head of the Centre. He was promoted to the Personal Chair of Nanomedic
ine and Head of the Centre in 2007. The entire Nanomedicine Lab was embedd
ed within the Faculty of Medical and Human Sciences and the National Graph
ene Institute at the University of Manchester in 2013. Kostas is currently
Professor of Nanomedicine at the University of Manchester and Visiting Pr
ofessor at UCL Faculty of Life Sciences.\n\nHe has been invited Fellow of
the Royal Society of Chemistry (FRSC)\, Fellow of the Royal Society of Med
icine (FRSM)\, and Fellow of the Royal Society of Arts (FRSA) all in the U
nited Kingdom. In 2010 he was awarded the Japanese Society for the Promoti
on of Science (JSPS) Professorial Fellowship with the National Institute o
f Advanced Industrial Science and Technology (AIST) in Tsukuba\, Japan. He
has been included in the Highly Cited Researcher 2018 list (https://hcr.c
larivate.com) in the Cross-Field category.\n\nHe is the Founding and Senio
r Editor of the journal Nanomedicine and sits on the Editorial Board of:\n
 ACS Nano\, Bioconjugate Chemistry (ACS)\, 2D Materials (IOP)\, 2D Material
s & Applications (NPJ)\, Archives in Toxicology (Springer)\, Nanoscale Hor
izons (RSC)\, Journal of Visualized Experiments (JoVE)\, Applied Materials
Today (Elsevier)\, The Journal of Liposome Research (Taylor & Francis).\n
