DESCRIPTION:Prof. Dagmar Wachten\, University of Bonn (D)\nWEEKLY BIOENGIN
 EERING COLLOQUIA SERIES\n(sandwiches served)\n\nAbstract: \nPrimary cilia
are cellular antennae\, orchestrating signal transduction in most mammalia
n cells. Cilia dysfunction leads to the development of severe human diseas
es\, collectively termed ciliopathies. However\, the underlying molecular
mechanisms are ill-defined. Cilia constitute a unique subcellular compartm
ent. A diffusion barrier and the ciliary transport machinery maintain a pr
otein composition that is distinct from the cell body. Although cAMP signa
ling components are enriched in the cilium\, the role of ciliary cAMP sign
aling remains enigmatic. We have developed approaches that allow to specif
ically analyze cAMP signaling in motile and non-motile cilia using optogen
 etics and\, thereby\, shed light on ciliary signaling.\n\nBio:\nAcademic q
