DESCRIPTION:Aim: The Moore Foundation and Simons Foundation seek to suppor
 t novel research on the origin of the eukaryotic cell\, including understa
 nding the processes that may have led to the emergence of the first eukary
 otic common ancestor (FECA) and how FECA evolved into the last eukaryotic 
 common ancestor (LECA). These grants will advance understanding of the evo
 lutionary\, ecological and biological mechanisms that may have allowed eme
 rgence of the first eukaryotic cells almost two billion years ago and shou
 ld aim to demonstrate progress towards clarifying or eliminating eukaryoge
 nesis hypotheses. We also seek to support development of new hypotheses wi
 th potential to reveal novel but potentially unexpected insights into euka
 ryogenesis.\n \nResearchers and collaborative teams will be selected base
 d on their ability to clearly articulate which eukaryogenesis hypotheses f
 rame the proposed research and how the work will inform understanding of d
 ifferent steps in eukaryotic cell evolution.\n \nDuration:      2-3 y
 ears\n \nFunding:        No pre-determined award size\n \nEligibil
 ity: Individuals or teams may apply. We aim to have scientists who represe
 nt both early and established career stages and include both current and e
 merging leaders in their fields\; however\, to be eligible for this compet
 ition\, the proposal lead must hold a tenured or tenure-track position (or
  equivalent independent position). Applications are welcome from scientist
 s based in the United States and internationally.\n \nHow to Apply: The p
