DESCRIPTION:Maria Papadopoulou\, PhD Student\, School of Design and Enviro
nment\, Department of Building\, National University of Singapore (NUS)\nU
rban environmental systems are complex and modelling the air-flow around b
uildings is a challenging task. The lack of knowledge of the underlying ph
ysics\, the uncertainties involved in modelling\, or the incorrect values
of input parameters can introduce errors in the model predictions. The mai
n objective of this work is to develop a methodology for system identifica
tion and measurement system design\, so as to improve urban Computational
Fluid Dynamics (CFD) simulations. Previous work on system identification u
sing a population of candidate models is being tested with the case study
of an experimental facility in the Future Cities Laboratory in Singapore\,
called the “Bubble”. CFD simulations of the Bubble and its surroundin
g environment are under progress. Selecting and varying different paramete
rs such as the boundary conditions will generate a population of candidate
models. A measurement system design methodology will be developed to iden
tify the most appropriate measurements to be taken in order to enhance the
model predictions. Current work involves numerically studying the flow di
stribution around the “Bubble” and then comparing the results with on-
 site measurements.
