DESCRIPTION:M. Besta\, AGH University of Science and Technology\, Krakow
\, Poland\nThe TOTEM experiment at CERN aims at measurement of the total p
roton--proton cross section and at extensive research of proton elastic sc
attering and diffractive processes. The reconstruction\, general overview
and analysis of the data coming from the T1\, T2 and Roman Pot detectors i
nstalled in the LHC require the development of many tools responsible for
multiple tasks. In order to increase the convenience of the work of the sc
ientists it is essential to provide an efficient visualisation system whic
h would not only allow to inspect the events data or the detectors geometr
y but also enable flexible\, fast and convenient configuration adapted to
the personal needs of every scientist in the TOTEM Experiment.\n\nThe goal
of this thesis is to present such a system based on the technologies of C
++ and OpenGL and to describe its characteristics. The main reason for the
development of the system was the lack of such tool in TOTEM. The impleme
ntation was based on FROG Event Display\, a ready solution from the CMS Ex
periment. Nevertheless\, different physics programmes and scope necessitat
ed considerable changes both in the code and in the general structure of t
he offline and online visualisation.\n\nTopics being discussed start with
a brief introduction to High Energy Physics\, CERN\, the LHC\, tools and t
echnologies used in computational physics. The TOTEM Experiment and especi
ally its apparatus are described in more detail as well the requirements a
nalysis for the event display. After that\, a thorough overview of various
implementation issues is provided where several important problems\, meth
ods\, solutions and tests are presented. The illustration of the system ca
pabilities can be found at the end of the thesis.
