DESCRIPTION:Aim: Through the Congressionally Directed Medical Research Pro
gram (CDMRP)\, the Department of Defense is announcing the Reconstructive
Transplant Research Program (RTRP) for 2019. The Qualitative Research Awar
d supports multi-institutional partnerships for qualitative research studi
es that will help researchers and clinicians better understand the experie
nces of individuals involved in the reconstructive transplant process. Thi
s includes those who are considering\, or who have already received\, reco
nstructive transplant surgery and/or the reality of lifelong immunosuppres
sion\, as well as caregivers\, potential donors and their families\, and c
linicians. This understanding will\, in turn\, support the ultimate goal o
f improving transplant outcomes and the quality of life for individuals wh
 o receive these life-changing procedures.\n \nQualitative research is a f
orm of social inquiry that focuses on understanding how people interpret a
nd make sense of their experiences and the world in which they live. Obser
vations that drive a research idea may be derived from basic discovery\, p
 opulation-based studies\, a clinician’s first-hand knowledge of patients
\, or anecdotal data. Qualitative research is intended to be exploratory\,
open-ended\, and unbiased. The information gathered should be meaningful
and culturally appropriate to the participant\, unanticipated (not hypothe
sis-based) by the research team\, and rich and explanatory in nature.\n \
nTo meet the intent of the award mechanism\, applications to the FY19 CPMR
P Translational Research Award must address research in program’s Focus
Areas\, which are listed at the end of this announcement.\n \nFunding:
       Maximum USD $ 1’500’000\n \nDuration:      3 years\n
\nEligibility: The FY19 RTRP Qualitative Research Award is intended to sup
port multi-institutional partnerships among two to four investigators\, re
ferred to as the Initiating Principal Investigator (PI) and the Partnering
PI(s)\, each of whom will receive a separate award. Therefore\, all appli
cations must include at least two PIs representing at least two separate i
nstitutions. Independent investigators at all academic levels (or equivale
nt) may be named by the organization as the Initiating PI or a Partnering
PI on an application.  Applicants from international organizations or ins
titutions are eligible to apply\, and there are no citizenship restriction
s.\n \nHow to Apply: Pre-applications are submitted through the eBRAP pla

Areas\n \n\n	Define/assess the benefit or value of vascularized composite
allotransplantation (VCA)\, which may include but is not limited to the f
ollowing:\n	\n Determine the relative value of VCA compared to other trea
 tment options (e.g.\, prosthetics\, orthotics\, reconstruction)\n Determi
ne how VCA benefits the recipient’s communication and interactions with
family\, friends\, workplace\, and the community\, as well as their indivi
