DESCRIPTION:Prof. Jianping Fu\, University of Michigan\, Ann Arbor\, MI (U
 SA)\nBIOENGINEERING SEMINAR\n \nAbstract:\nEarly human embryonic developm
ent remains mysterious due to drastic species divergences between humans a
nd other mammalian models and limited accessibility to human embryo sample
 s.  Recent studies from my laboratory and others have shown that under su
itable culture conditions human pluripotent stem cells (hPSCs) can undergo
intricate morphogenetic events and self-organize to form patterned human
embryo-like structures in vitro.  These synthetic human embryonic-like ti
ssues hold great promises for advancing human embryology and reproductive
 medicine.  In this talk\, I will describe a hPSC-based\, synthetic 3D mod
el of human post-implantation development that recapitulates key developme
ntal landmarks successively\, including pro-amniotic cavity formation\, am
 niotic ectoderm-epiblast patterning\, primordial germ cell specification\,
and development of the primitive streak with controlled anteroposterior p
olarity.  We further show that the amniotic ectoderm\, as the first linea
ge that segregates from the epiblast upon implantation of the human embryo
\, functions as a signaling center to trigger primitive streak development
in the epiblast.  Together\, our research has developed a powerful synth
etic embryological model and provided new understandings of previously ina
ccessible but critical embryogenic events in human development.\n\nBio:\nJ
ianping Fu is currently an Associate Professor at the University of Michig
an\, Ann Arbor\, with a primary appointment in the Mechanical Engineering
Department and courtesy appointments in the Biomedical Engineering Departm
ent and the Cell and Developmental Biology Department.  He is a Core Facu
lty Member for the UM Center for Organogenesis\, the UM Comprehensive Canc
er Center\, and the UM Center for Systems Biology. Dr. Fu received a B.E
. degree (2000) from the University of Science and Technology of China (U
STC) and a M.S. degree (2002) from the University of California at Los An
geles (UCLA)\, both in Mechanical Engineering.  He earned his Ph.D. degre
e in Mechanical Engineering from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology
(MIT) in 2007 for thesis completed with Dr. Jongyoon Han.  Dr. Fu was an
American Heart Association Postdoctoral Fellow in Dr. Christopher S. Che
n's group at the University of Pennsylvania from 2007 to 2009.\n
