DESCRIPTION:Prof. Daniel Shanahan\nAbstract\nMusical corpora have been use
d to examine the changing aspects of compositional style (e.g. Albrecht an
 d Huron\, 2013\; Broze and Shanahan\, 2013)\, as well as mutable aspects o
f the "situated cognition" of an audience (Byros\, 2009). Recent work (Sha
nahan and Albrecht\, 2019) has employed a combination of corpus and behavi
oral research to explore the nature of physical and cognitive constraints
on transmission\, and I will follow up on this work here\, discussing a th
eory of musical change through both corpus and behavioral approaches. Addi
tionally\, I will discuss how we might employ symbolic corpora to inform f
uture theories of musical change\, even when such corpora are lacking in d
ata or are of unknown origin.\n\nBio\nDaniel Shanahan is assistant profess
or of music theory and cognition at The Ohio State University. His work ha
s been published in Music Perception\, The Journal of New Music Research
\, The Journal of Jazz Studies\, The Journal of the Acoustical Society o
f America\, Cognition and Emotion\, and Musicae Scientiae\, among others
\, and he is the co-editor of Empirical Musicology Review and the forthc
oming Oxford Handbook of Music and Corpus Studies. He also serves on the
editorial boards of Musicae Scientiae\, Indiana Theory Review\, Engaging S
tudents\, and Music Theory Spectrum. He previously taught at the Universit
y of Virginia and Louisiana State University\, where he was the director o
f the Music Cognition and Computation Lab. He holds a PhD from the Univers
ity of Dublin\, Trinity College.\n\nDH Research Seminar\nThe DH Research S
eminar is a series of talks organised by the Digital Humanities Institute
given by researchers from a wide range of backgrounds and aiming at presen
ting the vast array of subjects covered by Digital Humanities.\n\nBe sure
to come. Listen to the talk and participate if you wish in the Q&A session
\, and continue to discuss the subject with the speaker and the other par
ticipants in a relaxed athmosphere during the apero that will follow the t
 alk.
