DESCRIPTION:Prof. Pascale Kuntz\nAbstract\nFrench surveys have revealed th
at for one third of employees\, professional digital tools are a cause of
stress\, and that for the general public\, one in five adults never used d
igital tools or stopped using them because of their difficulty. Moreover\,
negative feelings are reported by more than 60% of the interviewees of a
survey on Artificial Intelligence. A large literature is now devoted to th
e explanatory factors but the role of engineers and developers of digital
technologies is still poorly studied. The popular adage "it's computers’
fault" captures this invisibility. Yet major international AI conferences
now include sessions dedicated to ethical issues and societal impacts tha
t engage scientists. In this presentation\, which will take the liberty of
a reflexive posture\, I will analyze different avenues of research that I
have explored in an attempt to develop data mining and artificial intelli
gence algorithms "more adapted" to human users.\nThree approaches will be
discussed:\n(1) human-algorithm coupling through knowledge modeling with o
ntologies\, and "relevant" information filtering with data visualization\n
 (2) human-inspired algorithms based on usage observations\n(3) machine lea
rning algorithms accessibility by including available computing resources
in the algorithm development.\n\nDH Research Seminar\nThe DH Research Semi
nar is a series of talks organised by the Digital Humanities Institute giv
en by researchers from a wide range of backgrounds and aiming at presentin
g the vast array of subjects covered by Digital Humanities.\n\nBe sure to
come. Listen to the talk and participate if you wish in the Q&A session\,
and continue to discuss the subject with the speaker and the other partic
ipants in a relaxed athmosphere during the apero that will follow the talk
.\n\nBio\nPascale Kuntz is full professor at the Polytechnic School of Nan
tes University and head of the Data Science and Decision pole of the Labor
atory of Digital Sciences of Nantes (CNRS). With an interdisciplinary back
ground in applied mathematics and social sciences (Master Paris Dauphine U
niversity and PhD EHESS\, Paris) she has been involved in many interdiscip
linary projects. Her main research areas are in supervised and unsupervise
d machine learning and data mining.  She is editor of the French journal
of Artifical Intelligence and vice-president of the French Speaking Societ
y of Classification. She is currently in charge of the UN mission for gend
 er equality.\n
