DESCRIPTION:Dr Rebecca Napolitano\n13:00 – 14:00 – Dr Rebecca Napolita
 no\nPhD Candidate\, Princeton University\, USA\n\nOld buildings\, new life
: Digital solutions for diagnosing existing infrastructure\n\nReduce. Reus
 e. Recycle. This is an oft-touted mantra in a world combating climate chan
ge\, deforestation\, overflowing landfills\, and depletion of natural reso
urces. As a society\, we have embraced this lifestyle when it comes to pla
stics\, cans\, and even electronics\; however\, the idea has not entirely
caught on for the built environment. While a building is far more complex
than a water bottle\, is it not just as important to reuse or recycle? Bef
ore a structure can be retrofit\, adapted for reuse\, or preserved\, a det
ailed diagnostic assessment is needed to provide vital information about t
he health of a structure. By understanding the performance and condition o
f a structure\, proper monitoring plans can be laid out\, funding can be a
llocated in advance\, and maintenance can move from being reactive to pred
ictive.\n \nThis research focuses on digital solutions for diagnostics of
existing infrastructure such as data extraction\, multi-modal data fusion
\, hybrid analytics\, and information modeling. Specifically in this talk\
, two of those core aspects will be discussed: multi-modal data fusion and
hybrid analytics (combination of physics-based modeling and data-driven m
odeling). The results of the methods developed were benchmarked against ex
perimental testing and applied to case studies such as the Baptistery di S
an Giovanni and Palazzo Vecchio in Florence\, Italy. Through the applicati
on of these novel methods to case studies\, the critical role that digital
solutions play for diagnostics in preservation and reuse efforts for deve
loping the next generation of smart and green infrastructure will be explo
 red.\n
