DESCRIPTION:Dr Isabella Schalko\n09:00 – 10:00 – Dr Isabella Schalko\n
Postdoctoral Fellow\, Massachusetts Institute of Technology\, Boston\, USA
\n\nStrengthening the resilience of hydraulic infrastructures and water sy
stems How to contribute to a better world\n\nThe biggest challenge for the
world today is mitigating the impacts of climate change on both human soc
iety and the ecosystem. An important role for hydraulic engineers is to st
rengthen the resilience of hydraulic infrastructures and water systems. Du
e to climate change the frequency of flash floods increases\, demanding ne
w measures that mitigate flood related hazards. To design resilient hydrau
lic infrastructures\, water\, sediment\, and wood transport are to be cons
idered. At the same time\, hydraulic infrastructures need to be designed\,
so sediment continuum and aquatic organism passage are restored during lo
w floods. In addition\, the revised Swiss Water Protection Act demands the
restoration of 4\,000 eco-morphologically impaired river kilometers by 20
 90. This requires an improved understanding of the physical and ecological
interactions in water systems.\n\nThis talk will present studies on (1) m
itigating flood related hazards that affect hydraulic infrastructures and
 (2) enhancing ecological functions in water systems. Future research direc
tions are discussed that will enable the design of robust mitigation measu
res and provide successful and cost-effective river restoration methods.
