DESCRIPTION:Prof. Jungsang Kim\, Duke University\nUtilizing unique propert
ies of quantum physics in principle enables computational speeds unmatched
by a conventional computer for an important set of problems. On the other
hand\, the practical technology to construct a functional\, scalable quan
tum computer remains a major challenge. Trapped ion systems feature long c
oherence times\, high fidelity quantum logic gates\, and high quantum effi
ciency state detection adequate for implementation of high performance qua
ntum computer. However\, similar to transistor technology in the early day
s\, we do not have a scalable technology platform on which large numbers o
f trapped ions can be integrated\, nor an architectural framework for asse
mbling a complex functional circuit capable of executing useful algorithms
. In this work\, I will present a scalable quantum computer architecture f
or trapped ions\, based on both local Coulomb interaction and photonic lin
ks interconnected through a reconfigurable optical network. This architect
ure provides possibility for implementation of large-scale fault-tolerant
quantum circuits capable of executing practical algorithms with orders of
magnitude higher efficiency. Experimental realization requires incorporati
on of microfabriation\, MEMS\, advanced digital circuits and optical syste
ms technologies\, along with new protocols for quantum logic operations. I
will provide concrete technology challenges and experimental progress in
 meeting them\, towards a demonstration of 80-qubit general-purpose quantum
  processor.
