DESCRIPTION:Dr Luis Filipe Carvalho da Costa is an engineer turned researc
her. He graduated with a Diploma degree in Environmental Engineering from
the University of Trás-os-Montes e Alto Douro (Portugal) in 2006 and rece
ived his PhD from the University of Greifswald in 2013. Currently working
at the the Potsdam Institute for Climate Impact Research\, he has led clim
ate impact and adaptation studies for European research projects and the G
erman Ministry of Environment. Recently\, he turned attention to quantifyi
ng the mitigation benefits of lifestyle change in Europe as part of the sc
ientific and managing team of the EUCal project.\nFailing  to  address
the  role  of  societal  change  will  make reaching the targets se
t in the Paris Agreement more difficult. Preliminary results of the EU Cal
culator model indicate that changes in individual behavior have comparable
greenhouse gas (GHG) reduction  potential  to  those  from  ambitiou
s technological deployment in transport and agriculture. In both cases\, t
he reductions in GHG come associated with important tradeoffs regarding in
vestment costs\, biodiversity\, water and - perhaps more importantly for t
he ongoing debate - time. The presentation will introduce the EUCalculator
model and other outcomes of the EUcalc project.
