DESCRIPTION:Dr Olivier Bachem\nTitle:\nGoogle Research Football: A Novel R
einforcement Learning Environment\n\nAbstract:\nRecent progress in the fie
ld of reinforcement learning has been accelerated by virtual learning envi
ronments such as video games\, where novel algorithms and ideas can be qui
ckly tested in a safe and reproducible manner. We introduce the Google Res
earch Football Environment\, a new reinforcement learning environment wher
e agents are trained to play football in an advanced\, physics-based 3D si
mulator. The resulting environment is challenging\, easy to use and custom
ize\, and it is available under a permissive open-source license. In addit
ion\, it provides support for multiplayer and multi-agent experiments. We
propose three full-game scenarios of varying difficulty with the Football
Benchmarks and report baseline results for three commonly used reinforceme
nt algorithms (IMPALA\, PPO\, and Ape-X DQN). We also provide a diverse se
t of simpler scenarios with the Football Academy and showcase several prom
ising research directions.\n\nBio:\nOlivier Bachem is a research scientist
in the Google Brain Team interested in fundamental problems in machine le
arning and artificial intelligence. He received his PhD from ETH Zurich wh
ere he was supervised by Andreas Krause in the Learning & Adaptive Systems
group. In his dissertation\, he investigated coresets - small summaries o
f large data sets with theoretical guarantees - and other sampling methods
for large-scale clustering. He also held a Google PhD Fellowship in Machi
ne Learning and was an Associated Fellow at the Max Planck ETH Center for
Learning Systems. Before that\, he obtained a bachelor’s degree in econo
mics (University of St. Gallen)\, a master’s degree in quantitative fina
nce (ETH Zurich & University of Zurich) as well as a master’s degree in
statistics (ETH Zurich) where he was awarded an ETH medal for his master t
 hesis.
