CATEGORIES:Call for proposal
DESCRIPTION:Aim:  The Public Library of Science (PLOS)\, the Center for O
pen Science (COS)\, and Flu Lab are collaborating to encourage the availab
ility of all findings that contribute to the influenza body of knowledge.
Through the Opening Influenza Research project\, they invite the influe
nza research community to “empty the file drawers” and contribute to a
thorough aggregation of open and accessible findings.\n\nThree types of p
rojects will be considered for funding:\n \n\n	Emptying the file-drawers
of existing negative and null results: Researchers often feel pressure to
leave experiments showing negative or inconclusive results out of reports
for concern that they decrease publishability\, yet the cost of doing so u
ndermines the overall value and credibility of the published literature. F
or this special collection\, we encourage laboratories to empty their file
drawers and share negative and null results to highlight their existence
and facilitate understanding of research pathways that are unproductive or
not yet robust for advancing influenza research. Accepted papers are elig
ible to receive a $5\,000 award and coverage of article processing charges
.\n\n \n\n\n	Emptying the file drawers of existing replication studies: M
any laboratories conduct replication studies but do not publish them becau
se of perceived lack of publishability. This same special collection\, the
refore\, also explicitly invites replication studies and encourages compre
hensive reporting of successes and failures to foster insight on the condi
tions under which phenomena can be observed.  Accepted papers are eligibl
e to receive a $5\,000 award and coverage of article processing charges.\n
 \n \n\n\n	New\, proposed\, highly-powered replications of important resul
ts in influenza research: Authors can propose to conduct highly-powered re
plications of existing influenza findings to improve credibility and verif
iability of existing claims. Proposals will be reviewed as Registered Rep
orts by PLOS ONE and PLOS Biology prior to conducting the research. Succe
ssful Stage 1 peer review concludes with provisional acceptance of the res
earch for publication\, preregistration of the experiment(s) and analysis
plan(s)\, and a funding award. Stage 2 peer review after the research is c
ompleted assesses only adherence to the accepted protocol and analysis pla
n and appropriate calibration of the conclusions. Successful Stage 1 propo
sals are eligible for up to $25\,000 awards to conduct the research and co
verage of article processing fees.\n\n \nWhichever submission type is sel
ected\, the primary focus of the work must be related to influenza\, thoug
h the specific discipline or methodology may be biomedical\, behavioral\,
 epidemiological\, or interdisciplinary. \n \nHow to Apply: A submission
starts with a pre-submission inquiry to COS to confirm eligibility\; only
inquiries that confirm eligibility with COS will be eligible for an award.
A response can be expected within 4 business days. After confirming eligi
bility\, the researchers submit either their full paper or registered repo
rt by the deadline listed below.\n \nDeadline:      30 November 2019
\n \nFurther information\n\n\n	More information about the program is avai
lable here\n	The submission inquiry can be submitted here\n	For any other
questions\, please contact the Research Office\n
