DESCRIPTION:Dr Inês Cardoso Pereira\, Bacterial Energy Metabolism Lab\, I
nstituto de Tecnologia Química e Biológica António Xavier\, Portugal\nA
bstract:\nDissimilatory sulfate reduction is a key microbial process that
sets off the biogeochemical sulfur cycle. We are interested in understandi
ng how energy is conserved in the process of sulfate respiration\, and hav
e studied several membrane complexes and soluble proteins from these organ
isms [1\,2]. In this talk I will highlight some recent advances in this ar
ea [3] as well as work on exploring the metabolism of sulfate reducers and
proteins thereof for useful biocatalytic conversions related to CO2 reduc
 tion and H2 production.\n\n[1] Rabus R\, Venceslau SS\, Wöhlbrand L\, Voo

doso Pereira is Principal Investigator with Habilitation at ITQB NOVA\, a
research institute of the Universidade NOVA de Lisboa\, Portugal\, where s
he heads the Microbial Energy Metabolism Laboratory. She got her PhD degre
e from the University of Oxford\, UK working with Jack Baldwin on the bios
ynthesis of cephalosporins. She returned to Portugal to do a Post-Doc with
Antonio Xavier and Miguel Teixeira on metalloproteins from anaerobes\, an
d later took a position as Assistant Professor and group leader at ITQB NO
VA. She was Director of the ITQB NOVA PhD program from 2008 to 2014\, and
is currently Vice-Dean of this institute. She is interested in the microbi
al physiology of anaerobes\, and in particular in their bioenergetics and
evolution. Her work has focused mainly on sulfur cycle bacteria. In additi
on\, her group also studies the mechanism and engineering of biotechnologi
cally relevant enzymes and applications of anaerobes in bioenergy and bior
emediation. She has over 100 publications and an h-index of 39 (Google Sch
 olar).\n\nhttps://scholar.google.com/citations?user=-hxebEEAAAAJ&hl=en
