DESCRIPTION:Dr. Oren Lavan\, Associate Professor\, Technion Israel Institu
te of Technology\nAbstract:\nOver the past three decades\, there has been
a significant shift in the approach to structural design under dynamic loa
dings. Many new technologies associated with passive energy dissipation an
d control have been introduced and have reached a considerable level of ma
turity. Furthermore\, the concept of performance-based design and financia
l loss considerations have gained prominence. While all of this represents
a major step forward\, as a consequence\, the design process itself has b
ecome increasingly complex.\nThe aim of this talk is to discuss the potent
ial role of structural optimization in the seismic design process. This wi
ll be done while presenting ongoing research in which the presenter has be
en involved. The research is focused on various optimal design methodologi
es using various types of energy dissipation devices. Particular attention
is given to the importance of a meaningful optimization problem formulati
on\, the value expected from utilizing optimization\, the importance of ta
iloring an appropriate optimization algorithm for a given problem\, and th
e potential of using optimization in practical design.\n\nBio:\nDr. Oren L
avan is an Associate Professor in the Faculty of Civil and Environmental E
ngineering at the Technion – Israel Institute of Technology. He received
his Ph.D. in Civil Engineering from the Technion in 2006\, and was a Visi
ting Research Scientist (2005-2007) at the Department of Civil\, Structura
l and Environmental Engineering\, University at Buffalo – The State Univ
ersity of New York. He spent a sabbatical as a Visiting Associate Professo
r at the Disaster Prevention Research Institute at Kyoto University (2014)
. Dr. Lavan teaches and conducts research in structural dynamics\, structu
 ral optimization\, earthquake engineering\, structural control\, progressi
ve collapse prediction and computational mechanics. He has published exten
sively in the area of structural engineering and mechanics\, including mor
e than forty five peer-reviewed articles in premier journals in the field.
