DESCRIPTION:Prof. Michael TSAPATSIS\nDepartment of Chemical and Biomolecul
 ar Engineering\,\nJohns Hopkins University\, USA\nChE-606 - Highlights in
Energy Research seminar series\nMetal-organic frameworks (MOFs) hold promi
se as separation membranes due to their structural diversity stemming from
theoretically unlimited metal/organic linker combinations enabled by dire
ct synthesis and by post-synthetic modifications. Although relatively rapi
d progress for highly selective MOF membranes has been achieved\, commerci
alization is still limited by the high processing costs and limited scalab
ility associated with solvothermal processing. The recent introduction of
solvent-free synthesis method for ZIF membranes\, by combining atomic laye
r deposition and ligand vapor treatment\, called ligand induced permselect
ivation (LIPS)\, holds promise for overcoming this obstacle. Systematic ch
aracterization of the microstructure of LIPS-ZIF-8 membranes and their per
meation properties under industrially relevant conditions (elevated feed p
ressure\, absence of any sweep gas in permeate) will be discussed. Moreove
r\, the facile modification of ZIF-8 membranes made by LIPS (LIPS-ZIF-8) t
hrough a vapor phase ligand treatment (VPLT) method to tune their separati
on performance towards smaller molecules will be presented. VPLT of a MOF
membrane is shown to allow for systematic regulation of permeation propert
ies. Of particular interest is the observed stable O2/N2 selective perfor
mance\, which compares favorably with that of optimized gas separation pol
ymeric membranes. VPLT is a versatile method\, applicable to thin and thic
k membranes made by different methods\, and when combined with LIPS\, it e
xtends the applicability of all-vapor MOF membrane processing to unprecede
nted levels of tunability for specific applications without sacrificing sc
alable processability.\n\nThe seminar can also be followed remotely by joi
ning the online Cisco WebEx meeting (connection possible 15 minutes before
the talk).\nSee here the documentation how to install the Cisco WebEx add
-on on your computer.\nIn case of problem\, you can contact our IT support
