DESCRIPTION:Prof. Richard Rimanyi\, University of North Carolina at Chapel
Hill\nGlobal topology forces the occurrence of singularities. A key notio
n measuring this phenomenon is a multivariable polynomial in universal cha
racteristic classes\, the "Thom polynomial'' of a singularity. In the lect
ure we will explore the theory of Thom polynomials\, the challenges and me
thods of their calculation (equivariant localization\, interpolation\, Gro
bner bases)\, as well as their applications in differential topology and a
lgebraic geometry.  We will also discuss related polynomials measuring de
 generacy of quivers and matroids.
