DESCRIPTION:Aim:  Established in 1995 to honor one of the leaders in the 
 arboriculture industry and a founder of the ISA Research Trust\, the Hylan
 d R. Johns Grant Program funds longer term research and technology transfe
 r projects that have the potential of benefiting the everyday work of arbo
 rists.\n\nFor 2020\, the Hyland R. Johns Grants Program seeks to fund rese
 arch on a topic related to urban tree Root and Soil Management beyond the 
 nursery. Some areas of particular interest to TREE Fund are:\n\n	Fertiliza
 tion: chemistry and/or application technology\;\n	Mycorrhizal fungi and ot
 her symbiotic microbes\;\n	Amendments to improve soil structure: gypsum\, 
 biochar\, integrated mulch\, other\;\n	Root pruning\;\n	Structural soil: c
 omposition\, effects\, etc.\;\n	Girdling and other misshapen roots: cause\
 , effect\, treatment\; and\n	Applied root physiology: studies to better un
 derstand reactions of roots to noxious soil-borne chemicals\, variable aer
 ation\, growth promoting hormones\, allelopathic chemicals\, etc.\n\n\nNot
 e that the list above is by no means exhaustive\, and proposals to answer 
 other questions relating to root and soil management will be considered.\n
 \nFunding: max. $25’000\n\nDuration: 3-5 years\n\nEligibility: TREE Fund
  welcomes research proposals and applications from a wide range of academi
 c and technical disciplines\, of both a qualitative and a quantitative nat
 ure. TREE Fund does not fund the following types of projects\, and will no
 t accept applications for such work:\n\n\n	Grants to individuals\;\n	Proje
 cts that are primarily municipal tree surveys or assessments\;\n	Tree plan
 ting programs\;\n	Studies of individual tree species for the primary purpo
 se of agricultural or timber/forest planting yield\;\n	Commercial tree- or
  soil-related product testing primarily for the benefit of the company tha
 t manufactures the product.\n\n\nHow to Apply: To apply\, send an email co
 ntaining a brief Letter of Inquiry (LOI) of no more than 100 words describ
 ing your project title and concept to <treefund@treefund.org> before 01-Ma
 r-2020\, ideally linking your concept to one of the defined 2020 priority 
 areas listed above. If your LOI is approved\, TREE Fund will send you a nu
 mbered application form for your use. The application form will contain th
 e following sections: overall project summary\, description of measurable 
 outcomes\, current knowledge in project area\, project work plan\, and dis
 semination plans. This\, in addition to a budget and CVs for all PIs and c
 ollaborators\, must be submitted by email to the address listed above.\n\n
