DESCRIPTION:Prof. Virginie Lurkin\n09:45 – 10:45 – Prof. Virginie Lurk
in\nAssistant Professor\, Eindhoven University of Technology\, The Nether
lands\n\nThe Future of Urban Mobility? Sky is certainly not the limit\n\nH
ow can we make optimal use of our limited urban space?\nTwo-thirds of the
world population will be living in cities by the year 2050. This increase
in urban population will exacerbate existing issues concerning urban traff
ic congestion and air pollution. In this talk\, I will discuss how Urban A
ir Mobility (UAM) could contribute to more sustainable cities by alleviati
ng transportation congestion on the ground. Based on zero-emission electri
c vertical take-off and landing (eVTOL) technology\, UAM represents an eff
icient\, rapid\, and reliable complementary solution to ground-based trans
portation. Drones and eVTOLs can also provide new cost-effective and flexi
ble solutions for fast direct-to-consumer last-mile deliveries.\nWhile the
technology to automate eVTOL exists\, many challenges remain. On the airl
ine operations side\, new mathematical models and methods to solve plannin
g and design decisions need to be developed. Furthermore\, there are sched
uling and routing problems which need to be solved. On the demand side\, n
ew behavioral models which provide insights in public acceptance of and de
mand for new air services are needed. Finally\, it is critical to integrat
e UAM services effectively with existing ground transportation modes such
 as public transportation.
