DESCRIPTION:Lefteris Kokoris Kogias\nAbstract\nIn the last decades\, compu
ting managed to scale societies and bring everyone closer. We Live in an e
ra of efficiency and speed. \nSpeed\, however\, is the enemy of  trust.
Trust  needs friction  and time to be built  and the current large-scal
e institutions\, such as the Media and the Government\, are failing to evo
lve fast enough on their own.  In this talk we are going to explore the e
volution of trust in our society and investigate the latest explosion of i
nterest in digital and decentralised trust technologies. \nTo this end\,
I am going to present both theoretical and practical advancements of my re
search in the last few years focusing on Byzantine Fault Tolerant systems
and algorithms\, answering questions such as: how can we get scalable dece
ntralised systems able to support the current financial ecosystems\, and h
ow can we scavenge randomness from multiple semi-trustworthy players to ru
 n publicly-verifiable lotteries or to audit elections\n\nShort bio\nLefter
is is a Postdoctoral researcher at EPFL\, working with Prof. Bryan Ford.\n
His research is in the intersection of computer security and distributed s
ystems.\nMore specifically he is interested in increasing the digital trus
t of online information and processes\, especially those that impact the p
hysical world.\nHe has been working on building a scalable and robust infr
astructure for\nthe future decentralised internet focusing on scalable blo
 ckchain systems\, bias-resistant decentralised randomness generation\, sec
ure software update dispersion and novel applications of threshold cryptog
raphy and distributed consensus.\nHis work has been published in top tier
computer science conferences like USENIX Security and IEEE Security & Priv
acy.\nHe has been awarded twice the IBM PhD Fellowship\, the EPFL EDIC Fel
lowship\, and the NTUA Thomaidio Award.\n
