DESCRIPTION:Professor Benjamin Eggleton is the Director of The University
of Sydney Nano Institute. He also currently serves as co-Director of the N
SW Smart Sensing Network (NSSN).  He was previously an ARC Laureate Fello
w and an ARC Federation Fellow twice and was founding Director of the ARC
Centre of Excellence for Ultrahigh bandwidth Devices for Optical Systems (
CUDOS) from 2003-2017. Eggleton is the author or coauthor of more than 49
 0 journal publications\, including Science\, Nature Photonics\, Nature Phy
sics\, Nature Communications\, Physical Review Letters and Optica and over
200 invited presentations. His journal papers have been cited 22\,000 tim
es according to webofscience with an h-number of 71 (93 in google scholar)
. Eggleton is a Fellow of the Australian Academy of Science (AAS)\, the
Australian Academy of Technology and Engineering (ATSE)\, the Optical Soci
ety of America\, IEEE Photonics and SPIE. He is Editor-in-Chief of APL Pho
tonics.\nNanophotonics deals with the manipulating of lightwaves at the na
noscale using nanostructures\, such as nanowires\, photonic crystals\, pla
smonics and metamaterials. My talk will review recent breakthroughs in ach
ieving on-chip control of lightwaves using nanophotonic circuits etched in
to hybrid planar geometries\, particularly silicon based. I will emphasize
new ultracompact signal processing functions realized using nonlinear opt
ical effects\, including Brillouin scattering\, which harness the interact
ion between light and sound waves for applications in telecommunications\,
  sensing and microwave technologies.\n \n[1] BJ Eggleton\, CG Poulton\, P
