DESCRIPTION:The Novartis Research Foundation (Novartis Forschungstiftung) 
 has just launched the 2020 FreeNovation thematic call for biomedical resea
 rch projects. Up to 15 projects will be supported with maximum CHF 180’0
 00 for 18 months.\n\nThe fields accepted for the 2020 call are:\n\n	Beyond
  CRISPR: tools and therapeutics\n	Unusual formats of therapeutics: vectors
 \, conjugates\, novel scaffolds\n	Genetic basis and molecular mechanisms o
 f acquiring allergies\n\nFor further information on the 2020 fields\, have
  a look at the “call announcement” document in the EPFL Toolkit.\n\nPr
 oposals must:\n\n\n	Relate to biomedical research with the ultimate aim to
  provide healthcare solutions for patients.\n	Be unconventional and radica
 l\, with the potential to open up novel research directions and aiming bey
 ond incremental innovation and discovery.\n	Be particularly original and h
 ard to fund by conventional funding programs due to the “unorthodox” c
 haracter of the idea or absence of a long-standing academic reputation hel
 d by the researchers.\n	NOT include commercial activities nor be influence
 d by commercial interests.\n\n\nInterdisciplinary research often has a hig
 her chance of funding.\nResults from preliminary studies are NOT a prerequ
 isite. Risk-taking is encouraged.\n\nWho can apply: \n\n\n	PhD or equivale
 nt qualification\n	Employed at a reputable healthcare or healthcare-relate
 d organization\, incl. university\, university hospital or university of a
 pplied science in Switzerland throughout the duration of the grant.\n	Max.
  2 applicants → co-applicants may together submit a single proposal. Alt
 ernatively\, they can submit two proposals\, but tag them as connected (al
 though connected proposals will be reviewed separately\, the benefits of t
 he collaboration will be factored into the evaluation).\n\n\nFunding & Dur
 ation: Max. CHF 180’000 for up to 18 months\n\nDeadlines:\n\n\n	Please f
 ill out the Institutional Support Letter template available in the EPFL To
 olkit\, have it signed by the Dean and\, if applicable\, by the Director o
 f the Institute and the Head of Unit\, and send it to research@epfl.ch by 
 10 April 2020 for the institutional signature. \n	Call Deadline: 18 April 
 2020 -> submit your proposal by 23:59 CET via FreeNovation online applicat
 ion portal.\n\n\nProposals will be reviewed anonymously to encourage young
  scientists and unconventional ideas by an international review committee 
 chaired by Prof. Gerd Folkers (ETHZ) with 6 academic and 3 Novartis scient
 ists\, who are experts in the field. Decisions will be communicated in mid
